Increasing Cases of Sex Assault in Uttar Pradesh

Even after the earnest efforts of Mayawati, Chief Minister of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, there has been no control over the increasing number of rape cases under her constituency. Macabre growth of the cases of sex assault has put a question on the Mayawati regime which recently claimed its achievement in restoring law and order in the state.

Recently, an incident which took place at Urdauli village in Uttar Pradesh not only shook the civilized society, but also terrified the entire Dalit community in India. In this village, a Dalit girl was not only raped but also lost her body parts. She lost parts of her nose, one of the ears and fingers.

Now, Indian media has also started giving a lot of weight to similar rape cases, especially if the victim is from Dalit community, raising questions on the law and order arrangements across the state. Not long ago, a BSP legislator, Purushottam Naresh Dwivedi, was accused of raping a minor girl in his house and then sending her to prison falsely by accusing her of theft in the household. But media took its responsibility and exposed the legislator.

Though the media has now realized its responsibility over the issue, but it won't always be possible even for the media to provide justice to the victims of similar acts.

Although, the government has arranged the free medical facilities and provide some considerable compensation to the victims, but this is not what the society demands. The society demands to set heavy punishment for the men accused and proved guilty with the charges of rape. There is also a high need to fast track the cases with similar offense in the Indian court of justice at various levels.

Hope that the Mayawati government comes up with some bold step to bring such horrible acts to an end and make Uttar Pradesh a safer place to live.
